Wewelsburg – Experience history in Germany´s triangular castle!

Public Guided Tours in English on April 15th, 2012, 3 p.m.

Once again in 2012, Wewelsburg District Museum offers public guided tours through its different departments in English language. Visitors can choose between two different tours – one leads through the Historical Museum of the Prince Bishopric of Paderborn, the other guides through the recently new opened exhibition “Ideology and Terror of the SS” in the Memorial Museum Wewelsburg 1933-1945.

The central issue of the Historical Museum – located in Wewelsburg Castle itself – is the history of the Paderborn Land , from the earliest settlements to secularisation in 1802. Visitors can touch coats of armour, see the dungeon, where assumed witches were held in captivity or have a look at an old Jesuit apothecary. This tour will inspire children and adults likewise!

The tour through the permanent exhibition “Ideology and Terror of the SS” in the former guardhouse of the SS at the castle forecourt presents the history of the SS´s activities in Wewelsburg within the broader context of the SS as a whole. Wewelsburg Castle was leased by Heinrich Himmler in 1934, who wanted to turn it into an ideological centre of the SS. For this issue the concentration camp Niederhagen was established beside the village – 1.285 people died here.

Both tours start at 3 p.m. Visitors who are interested in both departments of the museum should not worry which tour to choose: guided tours in English language can also be booked for private groups at all times.

Costs for the public guided tour: adults 3 €  /  reduced 1.50 €  /  Family ticket 6 €
